Horned demon across a full back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large horned demon with glowing eyes and a wide open mouth dominates the back, its clawed hand reaching forward beside a wisp of smoke. Behind it sit tall stone pillars and broken rubble at the lower edge, with fine shading that builds texture in the creature's skin and horns. The piece is rendered entirely in black and grey ink, and the composition fills the whole back from shoulder to waistband.

The abbot wanted a saint carved on the north pillar, and Tobiah Vane gave him a goat with a grudge instead. Eleven months of mallet and chisel had raised a thing with ram's horns curling back past its ears and a mouth wrenched open mid-roar. Vane hollowed its eyes deep so the lamp oil could sit in them, and the monks noticed the sockets glowed faintly after dusk. He told them it was the oil. He did not tell them that each morning he found fresh chips of stone on the scaffold boards, swept into little grey curls as though someone had been working through the night.

The abbot's men came for the pillar on the feast of Saint Brendan. They found the scaffold empty, the rope ladder cut, and the carved hand, which Vane had left rough at the wrist, now projecting from the stone to the elbow. Its fingers were curled around a lantern that had not been there the evening before. Smoke rose from the open mouth in a thin white ribbon and spread across the cloister roof like a fog that knew where it was going.
Vane was found three days later in the rubble at the foot of the pillar, a chisel in one hand and a fistful of dust in the other. The brothers buried him beneath the south wall. In spring they noticed that the saint on the south pillar, which Vane had finished the week before he died, had horns now, short and blunt, and eyes that caught the candlelight in a way the abbot found impossible to explain.
