Wild Things scene across a back
Back · Mixed · Photo
A large back piece shows several horned, furred creatures perched in and among leafy trees, with a yellow moon behind them. The figures are drawn in fine grey linework and shading, while the sky and foliage use soft blue and yellow washes. The design spans most of the upper back and is framed by the shoulders, with the person photographed from behind.

Dear Tomas,

The moon was over the allotments again last night, fat and yellow as a pear, so I took my flask out to the bench to watch it. You'll laugh, but the old hornbeams along the back fence have gone quite wild since you left. Mr Okafor says the council wants them felled, and I told him they'll have to get past the things sitting in them first. Four of them now, grey as wet slate, with horns like the ends of hockey sticks and grins that go nearly all the way round.
They didn't bother me. They only wanted to know whether I'd brought biscuits. I said no, and the biggest one, the one with a tail that curls like a question mark, sighed so hard that a branch shook loose a shower of blossom onto my hat. Then they started rocking the trees, slowly, the way you used to rock on the garden swing until your legs went numb, and the whole row of trunks creaked in time with them.
I stayed until the moon slid behind the church tower, and when I got home there was a scrap of paper on the mat in handwriting I didn't recognise. It said 'Mind the gate, we are not finished.' I think it was from them. I've left the gate on the latch, just in case.
Come home at Easter and we'll see who wins.
Love, Nan
