Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded black and grey wing with defined feather lines sits beneath a three-line script quote reading Tomorrow is never promised Just live. Grey swoosh lines run behind the lettering, suggesting motion. The tattoo is photographed straight on against bare skin, with a dark waistband at the top of the frame.

The gull came down on the gallery rail of the Skerry Light the morning after the storm, and the keeper's boy, Edwin, was the first to see it. One wing hung wrong at the joint, bent like a broken umbrella, and the bird watched him with the flat patience of creatures that have decided not to be afraid of people.

His grandfather told him to leave it be. Gulls mend or they don't, he said, and the sea doesn't ask which. But Edwin carried it down the seventy-two steps inside his jersey and kept it in the coal shed with a dish of pilchards and a lamp turned low. Each evening he read it the tide tables aloud, because his mother had once said that a voice counting things kept a body steady.

On the ninth day the gull stood up on its own and walked the length of the shed, then waited at the door with its head cocked at the sky. Edwin opened it. The bird did not leave at once. It looked back at him, lifted, and dropped low over the water, then climbed through the spray with its good wing and its mended one working together, the air streaming off its feathers in long pale ribbons.

That night the light came on at dusk as always, and Edwin climbed up to trim the wick. Below him the sea was going grey and silver. He thought of the gull, and how it had not waited for the storm to finish, only for the wing to hold. He took the slate from the hook by the lamp and wrote in his careful hand, Tomorrow is not promised, and then, underneath, because his grandfather would have wanted the work finished, Just live.
