Angel wings and Mum script on lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A pair of shaded angel wings sits above two lines of cursive script reading Mum and Love you forever, set on smooth skin. The feathers use dark outlines with grey shading and hatched texture, while the lettering is in clean, thin black linework. The tattoo is centred in the frame against a plain skin background, with dark clothing visible along the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been at the angel since seven, working the feathers one at a time with a claw chisel, while her father stood in the yard with his tea going cold and said nothing about the fee. The stone was grey-veined Sicilian marble, and the family wanted wings that looked as if they might lift off the plinth. Her father wanted them heavy. Nobody in Ashvale had ever bought a headstone that looked like it might leave.

The lettering had come first, dictated over the counter by a man in a wet wool coat who paid in advance and spelled nothing out. Mum, in a looped hand he had copied from a card. Below it, Love you forever, which Nell cut letter by letter with the V-tool, holding her breath so the dust wouldn't settle in the grooves. He had watched her from the doorway. When she asked what his mother had been like, he said she used to hang the washing out before anyone else was awake, and that she hummed flat and never noticed.

By noon the wings were roughed out, but they sat on the stone like a pair of coal scuttles. Nell took the smaller tools and began shaving the tips of the primaries until the light came through them at the edges. It took the whole afternoon. Her father came over at four and ran his thumb along one feather, frowning. "They'll not stand up to frost," he said. "They'll not stand up to anything."

"They will if I do the underside," Nell said, and kept working.

When she finally stood back, the sun was low and the marble had gone the colour of weak milk. She brushed the dust from the wings with the side of her hand, and it hung in the air for a moment like flour, settling on her sleeves. Nothing on the stone weighed more than it had to.
