Wing and stars on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a shaded wing or feather sits on the outer ankle, with two small solid stars placed above and below it. The wing is rendered with soft grey shading and dark edges against pale skin. The plain background shows a tiled floor and a blue stool, with the ankle filling most of the frame.

The lift was out again, so Maren took the stairs to the fourth floor with a paper cup of tea going cold in one hand and the clipboard tucked under her arm. Ward 4B was quiet in the way it only got between two and four, when the monitors hummed their own slow songs and the corridor lights dimmed to a permanent dusk. Mr Okonkwo in bed six had asked for the window blind to be lifted, so that he could see the car park lamps, and Maren had promised she would check on him twice before dawn.

She found him awake, his good hand resting on the blanket. Beyond the glass a single gull had settled on the roof of the bike shed, shifting its weight as if it had been told to wait. He pointed at it and grinned, and she laughed softly and said the gull was on night duty too. He told her his daughter had once wanted a bird tattooed on her foot, and that he had refused to pay for it, and then had paid for it anyway when she turned twenty-one. Maren wrote down his pulse and his fluid balance and did not ask about the foot, but she thought of it afterwards while she sat at the nurses' station with her cold tea.

At half past three the phone rang from the discharge office. A bed had come free upstairs, and a woman was being moved up from A&E with a fractured ankle and a bandage that was already spotting through. Maren went down to meet the porter, held the doors, and watched the trolley come in under the strip lights. The woman's ankle was turned slightly outward, and above the dressing, faint and grey against the pale skin, a small feather rose out of the shadow of the bone, two stars keeping watch above and below it. Maren gave her a blanket and said, gently, that she was safe now, and the woman breathed out and said, quite clearly, that it would fly again.
