Feathered wing on the side ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo of a wing covers the side of the torso, with long primary feathers sweeping up and curving towards the lower edge. The feathers use dark outlines, layered shading and soft grey gradients to give them depth and a lifelike texture. The wing sits against smooth skin and a dark top, and the image is framed from the side so the design fills the centre of the picture.

The snow has closed the pass since Tuesday, and you are the only guest left at the Hollin Gate inn who has not yet asked about the wireless. Mrs Abney keeps the fire banked and the ledger open, and she has given you the room above the yard because it has the only window facing the moor. You stand at it with a cup of cold tea and watch the drifts climb the dry-stone wall.

On the third night a man arrives on foot, stamping, his coat stiff with ice. He wears a long grey feather in his hatband, a primary as long as your forearm, and he asks for a room he cannot pay for. Mrs Abney gives it to him anyway. By morning he is gone, and the feather lies on your pillow, its vane split and silvered where the frost has got into it. Someone has written on the back of the ledger page in pencil: Keep it low. The wind comes off the tops.

You carry the feather down to the kitchen. Mrs Abney looks at it and then at you, and says the Abneys have always kept a bird on the moor, a barn owl that roosted in the chapel roof until the roof fell in. She turns the quill between her fingers. It is warm. You hold it up to the window, and along the shaft the barbs fan out in a dozen layers, each dark at its edge and paler toward the root, as if the light had been trying to get through and had not quite managed.

By noon the pass is open. You tuck the feather inside your oilskin and start up the track, and near the cairn you find a single line of prints going up the hill, deep and even, with none coming back down. You stand there a long while in the cold. Then you turn your collar up and go on towards the valley, the feather pressed flat against your ribs.
