Winged angel across a back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A figure from behind with bare upper back shows a large realistic angel tattoo, with the woman's head lowered and her arms drawn behind to join the spread wings. The linework and soft shading give the feathers and muscles depth, with fine detail along the wing edges. The ink is entirely in black and grey, set against a green-toned photograph with a blurred outdoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Harrow Wintle had carved three hundred headstones before he was asked for an angel, and he said so to the vicar, who only shrugged and pointed at the block of Portland stone sweating in the yard. "Make her look like she's listening," the vicar said. "Not like she's about to leave."

Harrow worked through February. He cut the feathers first, a row at a time, each one thinner than a fingernail at the edge, because a wing that looked heavy would make the whole churchyard seem to sink. When the rain came sideways off the moor he kept the chisel dry under his coat and went on. His daughter Ada brought him tea in a jam jar and watched the wings take shape from the back, the way they lifted from the shoulder blades and then folded inward to meet the arms.

On the last morning he ran out of patience with the head. The figure kept her face bowed, as though she had heard something on the path below and was deciding whether to answer it. Ada asked why he had not given her eyes. "Because she is not looking at us," Harrow said. "She is looking at whoever is coming up the hill."

Ada told the story at the lych gate to anyone who would listen, and she always ended it the same way: the angel is still there, her wings drawn tight behind her, and when the frost comes the feathers hold the water in their grooves like the last light of an afternoon nobody stayed to see.
