Feather and ribbon ankle tattoo
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A foot is shown from the side with a shaded black and grey feather hanging from a fine-lined ribbon that loops around the ankle and is tied with a small bead. The feather has soft grey gradients and fine strands, while the ribbon is drawn in crisp black linework. The sepia-toned background of buildings and scaffolding keeps focus on the ankle.

The feather came out of the lock at Hanwell with a gull's wing still caught in its quill, and my uncle Desmond swore it was a sign we should have stayed moored another week. I didn't believe in signs. I believed in the tow rope, the tiller and the eleven tons of coal sitting low in the Margaret Ann, and I believed that if we didn't reach Brentford before the tide turned we'd be sleeping in the mud.

We reached it. Desmond did not stop complaining, and the feather went into the cabin drawer with a length of ribbon from my mother's old sewing box, the green silk faded to the colour of pond weed. He said the ribbon was for lashing the cabin door shut in a gale. I think he just liked having something of hers within reach.
Three summers later, a woman with a rucksack and a wet spaniel boarded us at Oxford, asking for a lift to nowhere in particular. She had a brass bead threaded on a black cord and a habit of turning it between her fingers while she watched the water. I asked her what it was for. She said it was for holding onto a thing she didn't want to lose, then laughed at herself and said that sounded soppy.
When she left at Abingdon she handed me the feather. I hadn't known she'd taken it from the drawer. Desmond had died that winter, and I had carried the ribbon in my coat pocket since the funeral, and the feather was the last thing I'd meant to give anyone. She pressed it into my palm and walked up the towpath without looking back, and I stood on the cabin roof until the grey light lifted off the water and I could no longer tell the river from the sky.
