Winged chain tattoos on both legs

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two legs are shown from the front, each with a pair of black fine line wings sitting above the knee and a thin dotted chain falling down the shin. The left leg also has a small interlocked C emblem partway down the chain, and the right leg's chain ends near the ankle with a faint mark. The ink is black and grey against warm skin, with a softly blurred indoor background.

Now then, sit down, the lot of you, and let the cake wait. My grandmother knew a girl called Nell Pardoe who kept a bead box under the stairs at the chandler's in Whitby. Jet, she had, black as wet slate, and every bead was a bit of cliff that had fallen into the sea and been polished by it.

The wedding in question was the Harker boy's, and his bride wanted nothing the chapel had ever seen. So Nell took a length of waxed thread and started at the knee, where somebody had drawn a pair of wings in ink on brown paper. She sewed the beads in a line that fell like rain off a gutter, one after another, and every hundred she stopped and said a name under her breath. They were the names of the men lost off the Tuesday boat. Nobody had asked her to do that, but she did it anyway.

By the third evening the thread had run out at the ankle, and Nell had nothing left to bind it with. She tied a single shining bead on the end and left the last inch loose so the chain could swing free. The bride laughed and said it looked unfinished. Nell told her that was the whole idea, and the bride, who had been raised by a stern aunt, decided to believe her.

Nell packed her box that night and walked back up the cliff path with the wind in her hair. If you put your ear to the harbour wall on a still morning, they say you can still hear that loose bead knocking against the stone, keeping time with the tide.
