Surreal elephant on a calf
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of an elephant with an unusually high body and very long, thin legs, shown on the outer calf. The linework is loose and sketchy, with some heavier shading along the back and belly of the animal. The image is in warm, muted tones, with the blurred leg of another person visible at the right edge.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the wasps in the windfalls. No, Tomas, the elephant did not come up the lane on its own feet. It came on stilts of its own making, which is the part nobody tells right.

The beast belonged to a travelling fair that rolled through Herefordshire every August, and its keeper was a widow called Mrs Pell who kept it in a field behind the cider press. The elephant had grown tall that summer, not in its body but in its legs, the way a boy grows over a single winter. Each morning the legs had stretched a hand's breadth further, while the back stayed where it was, high and sorrowful above the grass, so it could only reach the top apples by bending its long neck down like a heron finding a fish.
Mrs Pell took it to the magistrate, who took one look at the thing folding itself over the orchard wall and said it was a matter for the church. The vicar blessed it. The blessing made the legs grow faster. So the widow did the only sensible thing and walked it to the river at dusk, where the water was deep enough to hide a fool's mistake, and she waited there until the stars came out in the reeds.
Come the morning the field was empty, the wall was whole, and every tree in the orchard had its fruit picked clean at the very top. Some say the elephant is still wading the Wye with its legs drawn up like tall pale ropes. I have seen the tracks myself. Mind you, they are in the mud where the ground is soft, and they go up the bank and stop.
