Winged heart crest with crescent moon on the torso

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A winged heart crest sits centrally on the upper abdomen, with a small crescent moon above a pink heart-shaped top and a pink faceted gem at the centre. The linework is bold and dark, with the gold wings and orange frame shaded in flat, solid fills and the gem given faceted highlights. The pink and orange palette dominates against pale skin, and the tattoo is framed by a person holding fabric at the top of the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo had me sewing the brooch onto the bodice the night before the Saturday dance at the Pavilion, and I kept pricking my thumb on the pin because I was watching the gem catch the light from the stage bulbs through the open back door. She had cut the heart from orange satin and padded it with foam so it stood proud, then stitched the pink crystal in the middle by hand, eleven facets, which she made me count twice.

The wings were the trouble. Pearl-gold organza wouldn't hold its shape, so she dipped the feathers in starch and pinned them flat on the ironing board until they stiffened like paper. Every time the dancers came through the side door they brought in cold air and the wings lifted, and she swore at them in Yoruba and then in English, and then she laughed, because she had made costumes for the Pavilion for thirty years and knew the dancers always wanted to fly.

Her own crescent moon, the little one on top, she had sewn last of all and would not let me touch. "That one goes on last or it goes wrong," she said, and she bit off the thread with her front teeth.

On the Saturday I stood in the wings with my hand on the curtain and watched the girl in the costume turn under the spotlight. The gem flashed on every turn. Nobody in the hall looked at me, which was the point, but I felt the whole room lift a little when the wings caught the light, the way the starched feathers had lifted off the board, and Mrs Okonedo, beside me, let out a breath she had been holding for a week.
