Three hearts with swirling scrolls
Black and grey · Flash
The design shows three solid black hearts of differing sizes, one large, one medium and one small, arranged on a diagonal. Thin, single-weight curling lines with spiral ends connect and surround the hearts. It is a flat, two-tone black on white image with no shading, so it reads as a stencil-style outline or silhouette.

The windfalls came early that August, and by the third week Hannah Vell had given up on the baskets. She worked the terraced rows with her apron knotted at the front, filling it, tipping it into the cider barrel, filling it again. Her brother Tom leaned on the gate with the cart, calling that the horse had no interest in an orchard that refused to finish.

Their grandmother had a tale for the three hearts carved into the gatepost, and she told it the way she told everything, flat and without fuss. A smith once came up the valley with nothing to pay for his supper but a promise. He drew the big heart in the dust, then a medium one, then a small, and the curling lines were the vines he tied round his ankles so he would not run off before the debt was settled. Hannah had never believed it, but she liked the order of it: the largest heart at the top like an oak in a hedge, the smallest left at the bottom where something had been dropped and not picked up.
Tom pointed out that the smith was long dead and the debt with him. Hannah said that was no reason to leave a thing unpaid. She filled the last apron, walked it down to the gate and set the reddest fruit on the flat stone at the foot of the post, right under the small heart, where the carved curl turned back on itself. Then she took the reins from Tom and let the cart go down the lane without her, the horse knowing the road better than either of them.
