Black swirl heart design

Black and grey · Flash

A symmetrical heart outline is formed from thick black tapering strokes and fine curling scrolls that spiral outward at the top and bottom. Small dots and droplet shapes sit among the swirls, and the open centre of the heart is left white. The design is rendered in solid black line work on a plain white square.

The swell had the stockpot walking across the hob again when Dessie Marr came down the companionway with his cap in his fists. He wanted a cake for his mother's seventieth, and he did not want the square sponge the Brenda Rose cook used to send out in a tin. I told him the Ardent had one icing bag, a tub of cream gone gritty, and a mother who would forgive us anything if we got the sea out of it.

I worked it on the chopping board between lurches, one knee braced against the bench. Icing sugar and a spoon of warm water, left to cool until it held its shape. A heart first, traced round a saucer I'd scrubbed clean. Then the scrolls: I let the bag run out in long tails that curled back on themselves, lifted the tip and dragged it so each swirl tapered to a point, and dotted the gaps with droplets the way my nan did on the Christmas cake in Grimsby. Every time the boat dropped, the line wobbled, and I started again from the centre.

By the time we came in past the Spurn light the cake had a lean to it, but the heart held. Dessie carried it up to the wheelhouse flat on both palms, the way you'd carry a live crab. The skipper looked at it a long while and said nothing, which on a trawler is as good as a speech.

The next morning a note came down the hatch in Dessie's careless capitals. MAM SAYS SHE WILL NOT EAT IT. SHE IS KEEPING IT ON THE WINDOWSILL. I scraped the saucer clean and left one faint ring of sugar on the bench where the first line had started, because it seemed a shame to wipe away the only good work I'd done all week.
