The ferry left without Ivo's order again, so he cut the lacquer by lamplight with the window open to the wet wind off the Sound. Forty sleeves lay stacked on the bench, each stamped with a name nobody on Harrow Holm had heard of, because those names belonged to boys the mainland had stopped wanting.

The crate came in March, nailed shut, a small padlock through the hasp and its key taped to the lid. Inside, wrapped in a shirt that still smelled of diesel and cigarettes, were the masters: a girl's voice cut too loud, a drum kit recorded in a bus shelter, a guitar that cracked on the high notes. A pencilled note said only, for whoever keeps the lamp lit.
He pressed two hundred copies and stacked them by the door for the next crossing. Mrs Dunne from the shop wanted to know who had paid for it. Ivo told her nobody had, which was true, and that the sleeve should say so plainly in capitals, because that was the one thing the island had always been good at.
On the morning boat he watched the crate go over the side with its empty hasp swinging. He kept one copy back, slid it into a sleeve printed with wings and chains, and set the needle down on the first track, listening to the bus shelter drum until the lamp guttered and the Sound went quiet.
