Owl and roses tattoo design

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

The drawing shows a front-facing owl with outstretched wings and wide eyes, with a beaded necklace across its chest, set above two open roses with leaves. Below the flowers, a layered fan of dotted petals fills the base of the composition. The design is drawn in fine black linework with stippled shading, and light pink wash is added to the owl's chest and the lower petals.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are the night clerk of Vellmere, a kingdom that exists only in the margins of old ledgers, and every evening the owl lands on your sill with the day's unopened letters tucked under one wing. Its eyes are wider than your lamp. Tonight it carries a string of seed beads in its beak, the kind the palace seamstresses lose in the cracks between floorboards.

The queen's gardener has been stripping roses from the eastern terrace to press into her wedding shawl, and the owl knows because it has been counting petals for years. Each bloom there opens one layer a night, like the fanned petals of the lower beds, and the gardener has been plucking the outer ones before they set. You take the necklace, run it through your fingers and count: forty-one. The queen ordered forty-two from the glassmakers of Orrin.

You walk the terrace at dawn with the owl on your shoulder. The gardener kneels by the lower bed, his thumbs stained pink from crushing petals to dye the thread. You don't accuse him. You hold out the bead and ask what the owl is owed for keeping quiet.

He laughs and says the owl has never wanted anything but a rose. So you pick the widest bloom and leave it on the sill. By morning the owl is gone, and the queen's shawl carries one pink bead more than the glassmaker ever sent, a small, stubborn thing that nobody at court can explain.
