Winged mandala tattoo across the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical winged ornament sits centrally across the chest, built from a teardrop-shaped motif, fan-like feathers and a row of hanging drops. The design is rendered in dense black dotwork stippling and clean solid outlines, with the greys coming from the stippled shading. Only black ink is used against pale skin, and the composition is centred with the hands framing the top edges.

The chandelier in Grimsholt Keep had not held a candle since the siege, but Mab Corrie still climbed the east stair each autumn to wipe its glass drops clean. Her grandmother had done it, and the miller's wife before that, because the lady of the castle had made the household promise it on the night the walls came down. Nobody remembered what the lady had promised the walls. They only remembered the promise about the lamp.

That autumn nine drops were missing from the lowest chain, and the flagstones beneath were still wet. Mab found a boy from the salt flats sitting in the window recess with his pockets bulging and his boots full of rain. He said the drops sang when you shook them, and that the lady had told him so in a dream. Mab did not believe in dreams, but she did believe in glass. She turned his pockets out one by one until seven of the nine fell onto the stones and broke into little rings of light.

They sat together and waited for the tide to go out, because that was when the old folk said the stone bird above the gate would open its wings. It did. Its shadow unfolded across the courtyard, every drop on the chandelier caught the last of the sea light, and the whole hall glittered like rain held in a net. The boy counted the two drops that remained. Mab told him to keep them, since the lady had never wanted the glass kept, only the lamp lit.

When the tide turned, the fishing boats were already coming in by the glow from the keep windows, and the boy was the first one down the hill to meet them.
