Winged pocket watch, roses and skull chest piece
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A large chest piece shows a pocket watch with Roman numerals and visible gears at the centre, with feathered wings spreading out on either side. Two shaded roses sit beneath the wings, and a skull with a row of beads hangs below the watch. The work is rendered in black and grey with smooth gradients, strong highlights and deep shadows, and the design fills the upper torso symmetrically.

The clockmaker's daughter had kept the great watch running for nine winters after the keep fell in on itself, winding it each dawn with a key that hung on a string round her neck. Nobody in Corrow Hollow asked her why. They asked her for the time, and she told them, and the roses on the garden wall went on blooming because the hour was never allowed to slip.

Then the crows came down from the broken battlements with a message in their beaks, folded small and sealed with black wax. It was from the Lord of the Eastern Marches, who wanted the watch itself, not the time. He said a clock that never stopped was a thing a dead man might use to count his way home, and he would pay three hundred silver pieces and a field of grain for it.
She did not answer the crows. Instead she carried the watch to the ruined chapel at midnight, set its hands to the minute the castle had burned, and left the skull-bead rosary coiled on the altar beside it. In the morning the feathered wings engraved on its case were folded flat, and the Lord's messengers found only a stopped clock and a girl asleep in the nave.
They say the watch still ticks inside the chapel wall when the frost is hard, and that anyone who listens long enough hears the hour they were meant to leave.
