Wolf and knotwork shoulder and arm tattoo
Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man's left shoulder and upper arm are covered by a large tattoo of a snarling wolf head over the shoulder top, with interlaced Celtic-style knots, spirals and scrollwork below it. The linework is bold and the shading is soft grey, giving the knots and wolf a raised, three-dimensional look. The design wraps around the arm and is framed against a dark background.

Nobody on the fourteenth floor of Holmfield House had seen the wolf come up the stairs, but everyone agreed it had been there since the lift was switched off for good. Old Mrs Adair said it walked the balcony walkways at dusk, its grey coat the colour of the concrete, stopping at each door to listen for the scrape of a spoon against a pan. Wherever it went, knots appeared on the steel handrails, loops that folded over themselves and never seemed to end.

Dev Kaur, who painted the stairwells every spring for the council, did not believe any of it until he scraped the rail on the eleventh landing and found the loops ran under the paint, deeper than his blade could reach. He followed them down to the boiler room in the basement, where the wolf lay with its head on its paws. Its eyes were the grey of wet slate. It did not get up. Instead it lifted one forepaw and showed him a knot pressed into the pad, a tangle that closed on itself with no loose end.
"You want the way out," the wolf said, which surprised him less than it should have. "Every loop has to be followed back to its own start. Keep your palm on the rail and count the turns." Dev counted. He climbed fourteen floors with his hand on the cold steel, turning each bend, until the air smelled of rain and the walkway lights flickered on below him.
When he reached his own door, the wolf was already sitting on the mat, waiting. Dev put the kettle on and made tea for them both. The loops on the rail outside never faded after that, though nobody else ever found where they began.
