Stylised skull design in white on black

Black and grey · Flash

A front-facing skull drawn in solid white on a plain black background. The linework is bold and angular, with sharp tendrils around the brows and cheekbones and a row of exaggerated teeth along the jaw. The design uses high contrast with no shading or gradients, so it reads as a simple graphic image.

You inherit Mrs Pengelly's boarding house in the second week of February, when Gull Terrace is dark except for your own front window. The key comes with a brass knocker shaped like a grinning skull, its brow sharp as flint, and a ledger listing every guest since 1911 in the same violet ink. Nobody has stayed since the autumn.

The first guest arrives on the evening tide, a man in a wet overcoat who asks for room four and keeps his gloves on. He signs the ledger without looking at the page. You notice his signature matches one from 1931, and you decide the damp has got into your eyes. He wants boiled eggs at six, and he asks whether the knocker's teeth have been polished, because he can hear them from the stairs.

At five past six the kitchen is cold, yet the eggs are already in the pan, though you did not put them there. The ledger lies open at a fresh line. Beneath the names someone has pressed the knocker's outline in ash, each tooth a little bar of soot. You carry the tray up to room four. The door stands open, the bed is made tight as a sailor's knot, and beyond the window the tide is climbing the breakwater without a sound.

Under the saucer you find a receipt, paid in full with coins from no currency you know and dated for tomorrow. You do not sleep. At dawn you polish the knocker until its teeth shine, and when you lift it the brass is cold enough to sting your palm. You think it has been waiting a long time for someone to answer.
