Winged XXV tattoo on a lower leg

Calf · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo showing a feathered wing rendered in black with blue shading, sitting above the Roman numerals XXV, which have a fragmented, cut-out look. The linework is bold and the wing has more tonal detail than the numerals. The skin is lit evenly against a dark background, with the composition centred on the tattoo.

Mira, the apprentice from the Halifax yard, had been watching him since morning with a sandwich forgotten in her hand. "You've split the second X," she said. He had. The crack ran down through the stroke like a seam in a boot. "Leave it," he said. "Water gets in there. Something always gets in."

Above them a swift had been circling the chimney of the old pump house all week, screaming down the length of the cut, dropping low over the water and rising again. When it banked, its wings showed a blue-black sheen against the grey sky, the same shade as the wet slate on the coping stones.

At four o'clock the bird folded its wings and dropped into the gap in the chimney brickwork, where it had nested since April. Harry picked up the chisel, looked at the crack in the second X, and found he could not bring himself to close it. Mira set the plaque in the wall that evening with the flaw facing the towpath, and the swift came back out into the light.
