Screaming zombie and tombstone on a calf
Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a snarling, bloodied zombie face with open mouth and visible teeth, rendered above a cracked grey tombstone with leaves and branches. A green zombie head with orange eyes sits lower down the leg. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows, and the palette mixes muted greys and greens with reds and oranges.

The churchyard at Harrowmere had one stone that never sat straight, and Mrs Pell swore it had cracked the night her husband went into the bog after the lamb. Nobody believed her, least of all the vicar, who had the mason out twice and got nothing but a shrug and a bill. Then the autumn came with its wet leaves plastered over the path, and the boys from the farm started a dare that ran from the lychgate to the stone and back before the church clock struck nine.

Tobias Quine took the dare on a Thursday. He was nineteen and had been drinking cider behind the bus shelter, and he told the others he would touch the crack in the stone and come home whistling. They watched from the wall. He crouched, pressed his palm to the grey slab, and laughed. Then the laugh went wrong, stretched long and high, and the boys swore afterwards that the sound came up through the ground rather than out of his mouth.
He was found at dawn with his back to the stone and a look on his face that the doctor from Cullen would not describe. Mrs Pell went to the grave that morning with a jug of milk and a clean rag. She wiped the crack clean, poured the milk along its line like a river, and said the name she had been keeping quiet for forty years. The leaves on the stone stopped trembling. The bog stayed quiet all winter, and nobody dared take the dare again.
