Wolf and stag pencil design sketch
Mixed · Flash
A loose pencil sketch shows a snarling wolf in the foreground with its jaws open, overlapping a stag with branching antlers behind it. Dark graphite construction lines and scribbled hatching sit over the drawing, with red pencil highlighting the wolf's head, ears and fur. The composition fills the sheet, with the animals cropped at the edges and loose marks around them.

The stag was caught by its antlers in the wire of the Hollin Wood fence when my father found it, and it had fought the wire so long that the snow beneath it had gone pink. He sent me running for the bolt cutters, and I ran the whole half mile to the Crown with my heart knocking against my ribs, because Eli Dunn kept his wolf-dog chained in the yard there, a grey brute with one torn ear that the whole town crossed the road to avoid.

Eli came out with the dog on a short chain and a face like a bolted door. 'He'll not like what the beast does to him,' he said, meaning the stag, and I said that wasn't my business, and didn't know where I'd found the nerve. He looked at me a long moment, then unhooked the chain from the post.
When we reached the fence the stag had lowered its head, its breath smoking, and the dog stopped dead at the edge of the trees. Neither of them moved. The wolf-dog's ears went back and then forward again, and the stag's eye rolled toward us but never left the dog. I cut the last strand while they watched each other, and the stag tore free in one heave, leaving a tuft of grey hair snagged on the barbs. The dog gave one bark, not at the stag but at the dark of the wood, as if warning something else off.
My father's hands were raw from the wire when we got home, and he said nothing about the constable, nor did Eli. The tuft hung on the barb until the thaw. I still think of it every spring, how the stag went up the hill without a backward glance, and how Eli stood at the fence with the chain slack in his fist, watching the trees long after there was nothing left to watch.
