Profile woman with roses in red pencil sketch

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A red pencil sketch shows a woman in profile, looking up and to the left, with long curled hair decorated with roses. A string of pearls hangs across her chest and one hand rests near her collarbone, with loose circular guide lines around the figure. The linework is loose and sketched, with light hatching in the hair and no shading or fill beyond the red line.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rose ribbons were the trouble, not the hair. Mrs Abernathy wanted them threaded through every curl so that when she turned her head at the Pantheon the whole pile would nod like a bed of bloom, and I had been three nights at the block trying to make the wire hold. Master Dunning looked at my red chalk drawings every morning and said nothing, which was how I knew they were wrong.

On the fourth morning I drew her as she was, not as she wanted to be seen. Chin up, eyes on the ceiling rose, a string of her late husband's pearls looped twice across her collarbone. I drew the hair in loose spirals and gave each spiral a rose, round as a fist, and I went over the lines until the paper went soft. Dunning picked it up and held it to the window. He tapped the bottom corner where I had left a hand half finished, the fingers curled around nothing.

"She'll not pay for a hand that isn't holding anything," he said.

"She's holding the pearls," I said. He gave me a look over his spectacles, then laughed for the first time that month, and told me to finish the hand.

Mrs Abernathy came on the Thursday. She did not look at the wig. She looked at the red drawing pinned to the board beside it and was quiet for a long while, and then she asked whether a person could be made to look up without being made to look away. I told her I did not know. She took the sheet, folded it into her glove, and went out into the rain without her ribbons.
