Wolf and symbol finger tattoos on a hand
Traditional · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched hand is shown with small black and grey tattoos across the finger joints, including a snarling wolf head, a compass and square motif, a flower-like design, and an eye within a triangle. Larger shaded tattoos extend across the back of the hand, with bold outlines and soft grey tones. The soft-focus background of a dark patterned fabric keeps the focus on the hand.

The bakery on Clewer Street opened its shutters at five, but by half three the flour was already up to our elbows and the ovens ticked like something breathing. Uncle Teddy took the bread and I took the rolls, and neither of us spoke until the first tray was out. He said silence was how you kept a dough honest.

Teddy had a habit of drawing in the margins of the order book while the loaves proved: a wolf's head with its lip curled, a set square laid over a pair of compass points, a rose with too many petals, and a triangle with an eye in it that watched you count the change. He said they were his way of remembering things. The compass was for the road he'd walked to get here, the square for the measure of a honest day, the rose for the girl who sold him his first sack of rye, and the eye for the landlord who never paid on time.
Last winter the order book went missing. I found it under the proving cloth, the pages stuck together with sugar, and at the back was a drawing I'd never seen: a wolf with its head low and its eyes on the door. Teddy had been dead six weeks by then. I sat on an upturned crate and did the orders myself, badly, the loaves coming out pale and squat.
At quarter to five the bell over the door rang. A woman in a wet coat asked if we had anything left. I had one tin loaf, scorched on the base, and I gave it to her for nothing. She looked at the open book on the counter, tapped the wolf with one finger and said, "He always was a worrier." Then she was gone, and the sky over the car park went the colour of weak tea.
