Geometric finger tattoos on a hand
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown palm down with small black geometric designs on the fingers, including diamonds, triangles and angular lines on the knuckles and middle sections. The linework is crisp and solid, with simple flat fills and no shading, and the ink is dark grey to black. Thin gold rings and a gold chain that runs from a ring to a bracelet with a small diamond-shaped pendant sit alongside the tattoos against a soft, blurred background.

Dear Tom,

The frost held the top field three days running, so I have been counting the ewes in the barn instead of walking them out. Father's marks are still on the gatepost where he left them in October: a diamond for every ewe put to the tup, a triangle for every one that carried, and a small dot in the corner for each one we lost. He never once wrote the figures in the book. He said a man who draws his flock is less likely to lie about it.
Yesterday I found the lambing pen had more dots than diamonds. I stood there with the lantern and tried to make the sums come out kind, but they would not. Mrs Pryce from the road came over with a pie and asked after you, and I told her you were well and busy in London, which is true enough. She looked at the gatepost for longer than was polite.
I have started cutting my own marks beside his. Triangles, mostly, sharp at the top, the way he liked. I am not sure yet whether they are for ewes or for days. The dogs won't go near the post now, and the wind comes through the gap in the wall at night and whistles the same three notes Father used to hum over the troughs.
Come home for the thaw if you can. Bring the good chisel. There is a post by the far gate with room on it still, and I would rather we did the rest of the counting together than have you read it in a letter from the solicitor.
Your sister, Nell
