The lights of the ring have gone amber again, and the old tracker in the cargo hold chirps like something hungry. You have been told not to touch the pack, but the pack has been touching you for three nights, scratching at the bulkhead with a patience no machine should own. Its name is Orlo. The engineers gave it a dull serial number, but the crew call it Orlo because it answers to nothing else.

Orlo was built to hunt debris in the Tessaly belt, and its head was cast from the same grey alloy as the hull plates. A salvage crew with nothing better to do during a six-month dock inked it over, drawing circles and petals across the skull, ringing the eyes with lace, and setting a small closed eye at the centre of its brow. Nobody on the ring can tell you what that eye is for. Orlo's own sensor array is three lenses in a row, and the third one, the one nobody installed, sees the dark between stars as if it were a room.
Tonight the hull has cracked near sector nine, and the air is thinning in the lower decks. You open the hatch because the pack will not stop shoving at it, and it walks past you with its ruff raised, unhurried, toward the breach. Its brow eye glows the colour of a struck match. You follow it through the dark, counting handrails, until the pressure alarm steadies and the little light over the seal turns green.
When the welders arrive at dawn they find the patch already set, a neat dark seam, and beside it a ring of pawprints frozen in frost. Orlo sits on the seam like a stone. You tell the foreman it found the leak. He asks how. You say the wolf can see what we can't, and for once nobody laughs.
