Two cat heads stacked on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two cat heads are stacked one above the other on the inner forearm, the upper cat in a striped tabby pattern and the lower one looking forward with wide eyes. The linework and fine stippled shading give the faces soft, realistic fur texture and whiskers, set against plain pale skin. The image is in black and grey, with a blurred checkered floor in the background and the wearer's hand and rings in the foreground.

The last lorry was already ticking over when you came back for the tin box, and Alf stood in the mud with his cap in both hands, saying nothing. The big top had come down in sections since noon and the dew had got into everything, so the hook-a-duck canvas sagged like a wet sail. On the caravan step sat the two cats the fair had picked up in Carlisle: Mrs Pickering, the striped tabby who never once looked surprised, and Tuppence, the grey one with eyes too big for her face, who had been pacing that step since dusk.

"Only one of them rides to Ludlow," Alf said at last. "The council man wants the ground cleared by six."

"Which one?"

"Your call, Dora. You've been feeding them both." He turned away before you could argue. You stood there with a tin of pilchards still in your coat pocket and felt the weight of it, until Mrs Pickering rose, stretched, and walked straight into the cab as if the decision had been hers all along. Tuppence stayed on the step, staring at the empty field where the carousel had stood.

All summer you had tried to teach her to trust the rattle of the wheels. You had wrapped your scarf round the tin box and climbed onto the running board, ready to leave her with the caravan man, when the engine caught. You heard a scrabble behind you and there she was, springing across the puddle with her eyes fixed on the lamp.

She sat down on the seat between you and Alf, wide-eyed at the dark road, and did not blink once until Ludlow.
