Burning church on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black tattoo shows a multi-storey church with a pointed spire, surrounded by flame-like shapes curling upward on one side. The design uses thick solid black areas alongside fine horizontal and wavy hatching on the walls and ground. The ink is entirely black on pale skin, and the building is centred on the forearm against a plain white shirt and a dim, patterned background.

Sit down, the lot of you, and stop stamping your boots, because the floor has heard enough of that tonight. You want the story of Saint Ebba's, the one with the burning spire. My grandfather swore to it on his mother's Bible, and he was never a man to swear to anything he hadn't seen with his own eyes.

The church stood on the ridge above Harrow Mere until the autumn the bell rope rotted through. Vicar Stannard kept a lamp lit in the nave every night of the harvest, and the parish grumbled about the oil. On the eve of the Lammas fair the wind got into the loft where the hay was stacked for the lambing, and the lamp went over like a drunk man at a wedding.

The fire climbed the tower as though it was late for something. Smoke rose in black hooks against the sky, and the villagers, not knowing what else to do with their hands, danced in the lane below. Walt Orrell stood on the wagon with his fiddle and played a reel that kept time with the crackle of the beams. Nobody stopped. When the bell finally dropped into the ash, it made a sound like a cough.

Next morning the walls were still standing, only the roof gone. They hauled the stones down to the flat ground and built this hall from them, which is why we're dancing on a church floor tonight. Mind the third step by the door. Walt's fiddle still hangs on the hook by the stove, and when the damp gets in, it hums a little reel all on its own.
