Dear Bea,

The fox is back. I know you'll say I should stop feeding it, and I have, mostly, but it sits on the crate by the back door every night at half eleven, right when the last of the buckets go in, and it looks at me the way Dad used to look at a bad bet. Red down the back, grey smoking out round the throat, one ear always flat. The council man says it comes off the estate behind the Co-op. I say it comes from wherever good foxes come from.

Business is slow since the new lights went up on Cross Street. Nobody wants a bunch of marigolds at ten past eleven when the chip shop smells like a holiday. So I've been tying the orange ones into little posies just to keep my hands busy, and the fox watches me work the string. Last Thursday I left a bunch on the crate by mistake. By morning it was gone, and three dark leaves lay on the step like it had been fussy about the order.

I think it has a den under the railway arch. I think there are cubs, or there were, and I think I am the only soul in this city who would rather lose a sale than watch a fox go hungry. Don't tell Mam.

Come up at Easter. Bring the good thermos. I'll show you the arch, and you can tell me I'm daft to my face.

Love, Nell
