Wolf-headed woman with rose and arrows

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A drawn illustration of a woman with closed eyes and tear-like drips, wearing a wolf's head above her own and a rose tucked into her hair. Below her, a choker of skulls and skull-and-crossbones sits alongside animal skulls, crossed arrows and a shaded heart. The linework is fine and dense, with stippled and hatched shading in black ink on white.

The last train to Hollin Moor leaves at twenty past eleven, and by ten past you have already put the kettle on twice, because the platform lamp is flickering and you keep thinking someone has come through the barrier. You are the only porter left on the night shift. The timetable on the wall still lists a halt that closed in 1962, and the ticket machine still prints for it.

She arrives from the wrong side of the tracks with a grey wolf at her heel, its ruff flattened by rain. Her eyes are shut, and the dark drops that run from them leave beads on the platform that you will sweep up and find again in the morning. She asks for one ticket to the end of the line. You tell her the end of the line is a field now. She says she knows, and that the wolf has paid already, in the old way, with a bone from a bridge keeper's supper.

You reach for the stamp that has not been used since your father's time. A rose petal has come loose from the bloom behind her ear and lies on the counter beside the card. At her throat a cord of small skulls rattles like a wind chime, and two arrows cross above a black heart, pointing at nothing you can see. The wolf lifts its head, looks at you, then past you at the empty signal box, and waits.

You stamp the card. The train comes in out of the dark with no driver and no lights, and the wolf climbs the step first. She turns at the door, eyes still closed, and says the rain will stop by the cutting. It does. In the morning there is one petal on the bench, and the timetable on the wall has been changed to show a stop you have never heard of.
