Dripping portrait of a woman with white hair
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A stylised female portrait with white hair, pale closed eyes and streaks of dark ink running down the face and neck. The figure's shoulder and chest dissolve into red, pink and purple drips, with a red mark at the throat. Loose black linework sits over soft watercolour washes of blue, yellow and pink on a white background.

The thaw came on a Tuesday, and you were the first to notice the ink running down the barn door before anyone had their boots on. Ruth Penhallow had painted the lettering on that door forty years back, and now the blue ran in long fingers toward the threshold, pooling in the cracks where the frost had lifted. You put your hand flat against the wood. It was warm, which was wrong for February.

Your grandmother always said the woman in the upper field was made of snow that had forgotten to leave. Nobody had seen her face since the hard winter, only her white hair spread over the hedge like someone sleeping in a bath of milk. Her eyes stayed shut. Her shoulder had split open in rose-coloured meltwater, and the red at her throat was the one thing in the valley that never faded. You went up anyway, with the feed bucket on your hip, because the ewes were penned on that side and somebody had to.
She was not asleep. When you reached the gate, a cold trickle of colour ran down her cheek and dripped off her chin onto your boot. "Leave the gate on the latch," she said, in a voice like a tap left running. "I'm only going where the water goes." You told her the ewes needed feeding. She laughed, and the laugh came out as a gush of violet onto the frozen grass, which steamed.
You fed the ewes that evening and did not look back at the field. By morning the hedge was bare, the hair gone, and the only mark left was a faint pink stain across the gate, shaped like a hand on the latch. Ruth's door had dried clean. You still leave the gate on the latch every night, and nobody on the farm has asked you why.
