Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
A woman in profile wears a feathered headdress with a beaded ornament, drop earrings and a layered pearl necklace. She holds a fan of peacock feathers and a fringed tassel, and wears a fishnet glove and a fringed bodice. The drawing uses fine blue pencil linework with soft shading and the figure fills a tall composition.

The wipers on the Bedford gave up somewhere above Cragg Pass, so Dolly Ashworth drove with her nose almost against the glass and the peacock fan across her knees. Every time the road bent, the headlamps caught the eyes on its feathers, a dozen small blue moons sliding out of the dark and back again. Behind her, the Harrow Brothers' Gaiety Revue slept on costume hampers, and the trunk with the pearls was roped under a tarpaulin that cracked like a sail whenever the wind found it.

Tom the lighting man woke up as the van slowed and said the pass was shut ahead, a lorry on its side and a line of headlamps stacked up behind it like beads on a string. Dolly sighed, pinned the beaded ornament back into her hair by feel, and pulled on the fishnet gloves she had sworn she would never wear on a mountain. Then she climbed out into the sleet with the fan under one arm.
The drivers in the lay-by had been stamping their feet and swearing at the council for an hour. When a girl in a fringed bodice and a headdress stepped into the beam of their lorries, the swearing stopped. Dolly opened the fan slowly, the way Mrs Harrow had taught her in a draughty church hall in Leeds, and the peacock eyes flared gold under the lamps. Somebody whistled. Somebody else began to clap in time with the drip from the rocks.
By dawn the gangers had winched the lorry upright and the road was open again. Dolly folded the fan shut, its feathers beaded with wet and dull at the tips, and found a flask of tea on the dashboard, still warm, with a note in biro that said only: worth the wait.
