Wolf-headed woman with rose flash
Traditional · Colour · Flash
A coloured flash drawing of a woman with dark, pinned curls and red-shaded cheeks, with a snarling wolf's head resting on top of her head. Strands of pearls wrap around her arm and hand, and a tattooed-style floral design appears on her upper arm. A large red rose with black leaves sits below her, flanked by grey and black scrollwork on a cream background.

Dear Hester, Lil came back up the lane on Tuesday with the wolf sitting on her head like a hat, and nobody in Harrowgate has yet found the nerve to say so. The castle has been roofless since the siege, and the wolf has lived in its east tower longer than anyone's grandmother can recall, so I suppose he decided to come and see the world with her.

She will not explain the pearls. Forty-one of them, she says, all strung on the same silk thread, and she has spent a fortnight picking them out of the worst puddles on the Lister Road, one at a time, because each one is a sentence her mother never finished. The wolf watches the hedgerows with his red eyes and says nothing, which is more than I can say for the vicar.
Last night she took me up the tower steps to show me the rose. It grows through the old hearth where the great fire used to be, a red thing as wide as a cartwheel, and its leaves are black as the ash in the grate. Lil laid one pearl at its root and the wolf gave a short bark, and the whole stone floor seemed to breathe out.
I did not sleep. This morning I counted the pearls in my apron pocket and found forty-two. Come home, Hester, and bring your good scissors. I think Lil means to leave again, and this time I would rather be the one holding the thread.
