Antlered woman with red roses

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A woman with glamorous 1920s-style curled hair wears deer antlers and a headpiece of red flowers, with a string of pearls at her neck and one hand raised near her chest. Bold black outlines and soft shading define the face, fur trim and leaves, and several large red roses fill the lower half. The design is coloured mainly in red, with cream, brown and black, set against a cream paper background.

He had come down from the moor above Pendle, he said, because the hills had gone quiet and the sea had not. He wore a collar of grey fur and a string of pearls that he swore were river pebbles, and she was welcome to doubt him. When the band struck up a foxtrot, he offered her his arm, and the regulars pretended not to stare while the stag's hooves clicked on the parquet in a rhythm the drummer found and followed.

She danced until her shoes pinched and her hair came down from its pins. Near midnight the floor manager came round with a broom, and by then the roses on the tables had dropped their petals and the stag had gone, leaving only a single rose on her tray beside the cold cup.

She tucked it behind her ear for the walk home along the prom, where the lamps of the tower were going dark one by one. The next Saturday the manager found her name pencilled on the dance rota, and nobody thought to ask why the girl on tea duty now wore a red nail polish that never chipped.
