Wolf heads, skulls and crescent moons design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A central eye sits between two snarling wolf heads, with skulls stacked above them and a crescent moon on each side. A pentagram-style star outline and a small symbol sit at the top and centre of the composition. The design is built from fine stippled dots and shading in black ink on a pale parchment-toned background.

The third skull on the lychgate post had been turned to face the lane again, and Mrs Pym swore it was the wind. Hannah knew better. She had been sent up the hill at dusk with a lamp and a loaf for old Tobias Greer, who had not come down to the Plough for a week, and the path ran along the wood's edge where the bracken grew higher than a child's head.

The wolves had not been seen in the county since her grandmother's time, but the village kept their heads carved on the old boundary stones all the same, jaws open toward the trees. Halfway up, the trail split around a hollow where the moon came down silver through the oaks, and in the middle of the hollow sat a single round stone with a crack across it like a closed lid. Tobias had told her once that the crack was where the eye had been put in, and that the eye did not close when the rest of the parish slept.
She did not look at the stone. She kept her gaze on the lamp and on the crescent hung low over the wall, and she counted her steps the way her mother had taught her, one for each bone in a hand. At nineteen the path went quiet. At twenty-three the wolves began to breathe, long and patient, somewhere under the bracken on both sides.
Tobias's door stood open. Inside, the fire had gone to ash and a cup sat on the table, still warm, with a bird's skull set upside down in its saucer. Hannah put down the loaf. Behind her the lamp flickered once, and she heard the stone groan as something turned its weight to watch her go.
