Realistic wolf head tattoo in profile with green watercolour splashes, black linework foliage and pink and yellow flowers on the chest.

Wolf portrait with flowers on chest

Realism · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A wolf's head in profile fills the upper chest, shaded in browns and greys with a visible amber eye. Black linework branches and foliage sit behind the head, while pink and yellow flowers run along its lower edge. Soft green and pink watercolour washes fade out around the design, and the colour is mixed with the shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The winter the lamp failed at Haskerry Head, a wolf came down off the heather and sat at the foot of the tower as though it were waiting for a ferry. Old Ansel Gurr said it was the last wolf in the county. His wife said it was a collie that had strayed from the Mowat farm. The boy who carried the paraffin said nothing at all, because he had seen its eye in the dark, and the eye was the colour of the lamp itself.

The keeper's daughter, Elin, set a plate of mackerel by the door each evening, and each morning the plate was empty and the wolf was lying on the step with its nose on its paws. It walked the cliff path ahead of her when she went to trim the wick, stopping where the ground was soft. Where its feet had pressed, sea pinks came up pale and foxgloves stood in purple rows, though it was not yet spring and nobody had planted a thing.

In March a fog came in thick as wool. Ruth Anning's boat was out past the skerries, and the light was no use to her, because the glass had been fouled with salt for a week. Elin climbed to the gallery with a rag and found nothing to see. Then, low on the black rocks below, a point of amber showed and went out and showed again, always just ahead of the boat, and the boat came through the gap with a yard to spare.

Next morning the step was bare and the wolf was gone. Elin still leaves the lamp turned low each night, toward the heather, and in May the foxgloves stand along the path in a ring. Hold your breath at the right angle and the ferns behind them look like a head turned in profile, listening.
