Ada had counted the hens twice before the frost lifted, and the second count was one short again. Her father blamed the fox that lived in the big oak at the bottom of the lower field, and he had set the wire trap twice that week without catching anything but his own temper. She didn't tell him she had seen the animal sitting on the stile at dawn, orange as a dropped lamp, watching the yard as if it were reading something written there.

On the third morning she took the bucket down the slope herself. The oak was bare except for a few brown leaves clinging to the lower branches, and beneath them a litter of acorns had split open in the cold. Something moved in the hollow of the trunk, a pale moth folding its striped wings, then another. They should have been dead by November. Ada stood with the bucket against her hip and waited, the way her grandmother had taught her to wait for a ewe to make up its mind.

The fox came out from between the roots with a hen's feather stuck to its muzzle. It didn't run. It looked at her with eyes the colour of dark tea, then went back into the wood, leaving three neat prints in the frost and nothing else.

That evening she told her father the hens were fine. The count came out right at ten, and he didn't ask why she was smiling into the stove. She left the back gate unlatched and a dish of scraps on the wall, and in the morning the dish was clean, with a single acorn sitting in the middle of it like a coin paid back.
