Split geometric and realistic wolf on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head is tattooed on the outer thigh, split down the middle. The left half is built from black geometric facets and angular lines, while the right half is finely shaded in greys to show fur and a realistic snout. Both eyes are filled with bright blue ink, the only colour in the design, set against pale skin and a yellow wall.

Every harvest the wolf came down from Carrick Fell and stood at the back of the dance hall door, where the lamplight did not quite reach. Half of him was the grey wolf the old men talked about, shaggy at the ruff, with a wet black nose. The other half was made of slate and glass, cut into facets so sharp that the children were told not to lean on the sill where he rested his chin. Both his eyes were the blue of a cold spring, and nobody had ever seen him blink.

The fiddler, Tom Ashby, had played that hall for thirty years and was not afraid of wolves. One autumn night the wolf walked in through the doors, which was new, and the dancing stopped the way a clock stops. Tom did not stop. He lifted his bow and played the reel his mother had taught him, the one with the stumble in the third bar. The wolf turned his grey side towards the music and lowered his glass side to the floor. Where his shadow fell, the boards went quiet and cold.
He asked Ellen Cragg to dance. She had walked out with nobody since her brother drowned in the beck, and she said afterwards that his fur was warm under her hand, while the other side of him was like touching a window in January. They turned round the hall until the lamps guttered. Every time the wolf's facets caught the light they threw thin lines across the whitewash, lines that matched the ridges of the fell outside.
At cockcrow he set her down by the door and went back up the hill. In the morning Tom found the floor scored with fine angled marks, and Ellen found a splinter of blue glass caught in her shawl. She kept it on the sill. Whenever the fiddle played the reel with the stumble in it, the glass rang, very faintly, like something answering from the hills.
