Woman and wolf portrait on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman with long hair and dark eye makeup, wearing a wolf's head as a headdress above her. Her hand rests beneath her chin, with a thin bracelet visible at the wrist. Fine shading and smooth tonal gradients are used throughout, and the design fills the upper leg in a tall, vertical composition.

The wolf came down from the hill the winter the boats stopped going out, and it did not touch the sheep. It sat on the shingle below Sule Holm and watched the chimneys until the women began leaving bread on the wall for it, because nobody wanted to be the one who had turned it away.

Ailsa Garrow was the only one who went down to it. She was nineteen and too stubborn for fear, and she held out a heel of bread on her open palm the way her grandmother had taught her to feed the gulls. The wolf took it gently. Its eyes were the colour of wet slate, and when Ailsa tucked her chin into her hand to think, it copied her, resting its great head on its paws and waiting.

Her mother said that a creature which learns your habits has already decided something about you. In February the wolf led her along the cliff path to the place where the Mairi had gone down with her father and the two Tulloch boys. It did not go near the water. It sat and looked at the sea until Ailsa understood that she was meant to look too, and the tide, which had kept everything for nine weeks, pushed a single oar up onto the rocks at her feet.

She carried it home on her shoulder. Some said after that she wore the wolf's head over her hair when she went down to the shore, and some said she had only learned to stop being afraid of the dark. In spring the wolf went back to the hill. Ailsa kept the strand of kelp she had tied at her wrist for luck, and she never fed the wall again.
