The porter at Harrowmere had hung the signal bell on a length of iron chain since before the line was doubled, and every evening he rang it twice for the last train out of the valley. The villagers said the bell was cast from the chains of the men who cut the first embankment, and that it would only ring true for someone who had lost a person to the rails.

Maud Tennant came up the platform in the winter the bell cracked. She carried a basket of eggs for the stationmaster's wife and a question she would not ask. Nobody had ever told her why the bell rang flat. She stood beneath the awning and watched the lamp swing, and when the wind dropped she heard the fault in its note, like a sob held behind the teeth.

She climbed the iron ladder to the bell housing and found the chain rusted through at one link. Working it loose with a hairpin and a stone, she counted the links the way her mother had counted stitches, one for each name she had been told to forget. Forty-one. At the forty-second she stopped, set the stone down, and rang the bell once, hard, with her open palm.

The note came clean across the cutting. Down the line a lamp answered from the signal box, and the last train slid out of the valley on time, its driver lifting a hand to the empty platform. Maud put the broken link in her basket with the eggs and walked home before the frost came down.
