Masked woman and pocket watch on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A realistic portrait of a woman wearing a filigree masquerade mask with blue eyes and red lips fills the forearm, with a dark moon and clouds above and ornamental scrollwork below. Soft greyscale shading gives the face and mask depth, while the red lips and blue-toned pocket watch at the wrist add colour. The design wraps the arm, with the watch placed near the wrist and the mask at the centre.

The last guests were still fumbling with their ribbons when Tomas Hale's aunt pressed his grandfather's pocket watch into his palm. "Keep it running until the hour strikes," she said. He had wound it that morning, as he had every morning since the funeral. Above the garden wall a moon hung low and swollen, its edges smudged by cloud.

The bride had wanted a masquerade because her mother wore one to her own wedding in Venice and never once took it off in the photographs. Tomas had found this mask in a junk shop in Bath, wrapped in a 1962 newspaper, its silver scrollwork thick enough to hide a face, with one pale stone set at the brow. Clemence lifted it onto her hair and waited at the foot of the steps.

At eleven fifty-nine the watch gave a small, stubborn click and stopped. The courtyard went so quiet he could hear moths knocking against the lanterns. Clemence laughed, and somebody's glass chimed. His grandfather used to say a stopped watch was only a watch that had decided to listen to the room.

Tomas turned the case toward the moon and gave the crown one careful turn. The second hand jerked, caught, and swept on. Clemence came down the steps, pressed her thumb over the dial, and said, "Now it is midnight, so we can begin."
