A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Three summers the orange koi had fought the weir at Caddon Lock, and three summers Mara had watched it from the bench where she wove her hoops. She strung each one with grey line and knotted gull feathers from the mill roof to the bottom, so the wind could pass through the middle and keep the bad dreams out. The fish kept returning to the same flat stone below the spill, mouth working, scales catching the last of the dusk.

One evening the lock keeper's boy dropped a heel of loaf into the water, and the koi rose to it faster than it had ever risen to anything. Mara laughed and tossed another crust, then another, and the fish came closer to the bank than it ever had. "You want the top," she said. "Everyone wants the top."

Her grandmother had told her the old tale: a carp that climbed the falls became a dragon, and a dragon had no use for a bench or a net. Mara did not believe a word of it. She tied one last hoop, small enough to sit in a cupped hand, and set it on the stone where the koi could see its shadow wavering through the water. Then she went home and left the bread on the windowsill.

In the morning the hoop was gone and the weir ran quiet. On the bench lay a single copper scale, and beside it a grey feather with the water still beaded on its barbs, bright as a coin left out for the ferryman.
