Woman portrait and script full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo shown from four angles on the same arm, covering the upper arm down to the wrist. The central motif is a realistic portrait of a woman with dark, swept hair, framed by handwritten script lines with dates, with a bird, a heart and loose ink splashes lower on the forearm. The work is built from black and grey shading with soft, painterly edges and strong contrast against the pale skin and black backdrop.

You find the box behind the seed sacks in the tack room, the week the lane floods and the feed lorry can't get through. The paper has gone soft as cloth. Someone has written on every sheet in a slanting hand, with dates in the margins: 1962, 1963, a line about frost on the top field, another about a robin that wouldn't leave the sill. Your uncle never mentioned a wife who wrote things down.

You read them by the paraffin heater while the ewes shift in the pen across the yard. The entries stop in March of one year, but a single loose sheet has a heart drawn in blotted ink, the nib gone through the paper in two places, and beside it a splash of black like something spilt from a height. Held up to the lamp, the ink has run into the shape of a bird lifting off a fence post.
In the morning you walk out with that sheet folded inside your coat. The robin is on the gatepost, as if it has been waiting for you to come down the track. You tear a clean page from the back of the ledger, write the date at the top in your own careless hand, and under it put down what the farm actually needs: the lane is passable by noon, the ewes have lambed twice, the pump is running.
You pin the page inside the tack room door, where she would have pinned hers, and go out to the yard while the light is still grey over the hedge.
