Realism · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
Three views of a full arm sleeve running from the shoulder to the wrist, showing characters from Alice in Wonderland. The Cheshire cat, a Mad Hatter with a pocket watch, the Red Queen and a white rabbit are set among dark, swirling tree branches and smoky clouds. The style uses smooth, detailed shading with realistic skin-like tones against a deep teal and black background.

Every Tuesday the baker's boy went up the Hollin path with a basket of cold mutton, because the wood below Cold Ashes Farm had swallowed two carters in the spring and nobody in the village had the stomach to ask it why. He carried the basket to the stump where the old hatter sat, and the hatter took the mutton and gave back a hat, always a different one, stitched from the bark of the trees.

The wood was thick with smoke that never quite rose. Grey cats lay along the lower boughs, and when the boy looked straight at one it grinned without a face beneath the grin and told him he would be back before his bread went stale. The hatter kept a pocket watch on a loop of string. He said it belonged to a white rabbit who had run through the village one morning, late for something, and had left the watch behind because it ticked too loudly for a rabbit to carry.
One Tuesday the Red Queen came down the path with her crown of rust-red curls, shouting that the sky had been stolen and the boy was to find it. She had no sky of her own, she said, only the stump and the smoke. The boy asked what she would give him for the looking. She said the hours, which was all the hatter had ever wanted to sell.
The boy went home with the watch in his coat and the hat on his head. The next day the village clock struck noon twelve times in the dark, and the air smelled of mutton and bark. Nobody in Hollin Cross has been late since, and nobody goes up the path to ask why.
