Woman portrait with flowers and roses on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A stylised portrait of a woman in profile with dark hair swept up and a crown of yellow, red and orange flowers. Green monstera leaves sit behind her head and three red roses with white highlights line the base of the design across a black top. Bold black outlines and flat areas of blue, orange and yellow shading give the portrait a graphic, poster-like finish.

Nell had been on the fish shop shutter for three days when Mrs Okafor from number nine came out with a jug of tea and told her the face was wrong. Not the eyes, she said, but the blue. Faces didn't come in that blue. Nell said the blue was the light off the canal at six in the morning, the orange was the gas lamps, and the woman sniffed, set the jug on the step, and went back inside without a word.

On the fourth morning there was a cutting of monstera propped against the bins, its split leaves wrapped in yesterday's paper. Nell took it as a complaint about the render. She painted the leaves anyway, big and green, with yellow veins running through them like the seams in a tea cosy, and worked the roses along the bottom in the red she had been saving for a different job.
Mrs Okafor came back at dusk, looked up for a long time, and said the crown was too tidy. She took the brush from Nell's hand, dipped it in the orange, and flicked three spots above the hair where the flowers should spill loose, like someone who had stopped caring about being neat. Then she climbed down the ladder and took her tea with her.
By the time the shutter went up in the morning, the orange flicks were the first thing people saw, and the old woman was the one standing beneath them with her arms folded, pretending it had nothing to do with her.
