Woman in profile with horned creature on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A woman in side profile with closed eyes, black swept hair and a pearl headband, with a pink and orange horned creature with reaching limbs behind her head. Bold black outlines and smooth shading define the face and hair, while teal scale-like feathers and yellow and teal drapery add strong colour. The design fills the outer thigh and is shown on healed or healing skin under a plain light background.

Dear Tomas,

The snow came early over the Gallow Pass this year, and the carter from Ostry swears he saw the thing again on the switchbacks, horns first, arms flung wide like a man falling off a roof. I did not believe him until Mrs Haddow's boy came up the path on Tuesday with a feather in his cap, teal as a kingfisher and as long as my forearm. He would not give it back. He said the creature had shown him where the old mule trail ran under the drift, and that it wanted nothing in return but to be looked at.
I have been looking at it, if you want the truth. Every evening I go out to the gate with the lamp and wait for the bend where the rock opens like a mouth. It comes slowly, the way a woman walks into a room she has been told is cold. Its face is kind enough, I suppose, if you ignore the teeth. Its hair streams yellow behind it like the drapery over a saint's shoulders in the chapel at Vell, and it keeps its eyes shut, which I have come to think is courtesy rather than blindness.
Last night it stood at the gate and did not move, so I took my shawl and laid it on the wall. In the morning the shawl was folded neatly and the snow had been swept clear of a path straight down to the valley road. I have not thanked it. I do not know how a thing with so many hands would take thanks.
Come up before the thaw, Tomas. Bring the good salt. The pass is shorter when there are two of us watching the bend.
Yours, Ilse
