Woman portrait with braid and rose on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A portrait of a woman in profile-leaning three-quarter view, with a braided updo decorated with small flowers, drop earrings and small star-like sparkles around the head. The fine black linework is detailed and engraved-looking, with light shading on the face and hair, and it sits inside a green-edged oval frame. The peach rose at the base, with green leaves, adds the main colour, so the piece is mostly black ink with accents of orange-peach and green. The image is a three-panel collage of close-up and full views of the same tattoo on skin.

You are the frame-cutter's girl in Ammerlay, the river kingdom where copper is always dear and promises are cheap. For a month the portrait of Lady Ottilie Sayle has stood on Master Corran's easel, and tonight the oval frame must be finished before the varnish sets. You sit hunched over the green enamel at the workbench, cutting the rope edge one loop at a time, while the lamp smokes and the river hisses beyond the shutters.

The lady's steward arrives at the ninth bell with a purse and a complaint. Lady Ottilie wants the stars deeper, she says, cut so they catch candlelight and not merely hint at it. You tell him the stars are already as fine as a needle's eye. He tells you the lady has never once been pleased by fine, only by bright. So you take the burnisher and press each of the seven points until they throw small hard sparks, and you count them aloud because counting keeps your hands steady.
She comes herself at dawn, braid heavy with the blossoms she grows in her window box, and she holds the frame up to her face as if it were a mirror. For a long moment she says nothing. Then she tells you that Corran gave her a face fit for the court, and you have given her a border fit for herself. She sets a single pearl drop on the bench beside your tools and leaves before you can refuse it. The next morning, when Corran lifts the varnish cloth, the matching pearl already hangs from the painted ear, glowing as though it had never left.
