Woman portrait with tentacle and feathers

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A line drawing of a woman with large eyes and long flowing hair, with feathers woven into the hair on one side and a tentacle wrapping around her shoulder on the other. The design uses fine, dense hatching and stippled detail in black ink for the hair, feathers and scaled tentacle, with open white space around the figure. It is shown in black and grey only, drawn on plain white paper beside a technical drawing pen.

Your grandmother said the sea wanted the castle back for its own. She said a lot of things while she mended nets in the chapel, and most of them turned out true.

Something moved under the weed-choked steps last night. It lifted one arm the length of a fishing boat and set its suckers against the stone, feeling for a way in. You did not scream. You sang the bargain she taught you, the one about the feather and the knot, and the arm slid back into the green like a dropped ribbon.

Tonight the wind carries a smell of tar and wet hair, and the gull feathers you pinned to the gate last week are gone. In their place lies a single flight feather, notched the way she notched her debts, and beside it a length of rope tied in nine loops. You work the first knot loose with your teeth. The second comes easier. By the ninth, the sea has gone still and the water has stopped climbing.

You understand then that the castle was never what it wanted. It wanted someone to bargain with, and it has been patient for a very long time.
