Woman profile tattoo on the ribs

Ribs · Colour · Photo

A tattoo of a woman in profile, facing left, with dark hair swept back and a pale face picked out in red and pink tones. The shading is soft and blended, with loose, sweeping brushstroke-like areas of teal, green and dark ink around the figure. The design fills the side of the ribs and the colour ink dominates the composition.

Dear Ines,

The vermilion came in yesterday, two kilos of it sealed in tin, and I have spent the evening sitting with it under the lamp, the way you used to sit with your grandmother's watercolours. You will laugh, but I think the old pigment is warmer than the synthetic stuff the works sends up now. It has a grain to it that catches on the thumb.

I have been thinking about the profile Mr Okonedo asked me to match for the Harbour Gallery. He wants the woman turned to the left, hair swept back as if a gust has caught it off the water, her cheek lit rose where the sun would hit. The original was painted on a ferry panel before the flood years, and only her face and the sweep of her neck survived the damp. Everything else is teal and green, dragged across the board in fast strokes, as if the sea were trying to take her back and she would not let it.

I mixed a teal from the copper ash and the blue we salvaged from the bridge signs, and it sat wrong. Too cold. Then I let a drop of dark ink run into the wet edge of the stroke, and it bloomed the way ink does in rain, and the whole thing came alive. I left a thin red line along her brow where the brush slipped. Mr Okonedo will hate it. I think it is the truest thing I have done.

I am going to walk the panel down to the gallery at first light, before the gulls wake. Keep the lamp on for me, and save me some of that bread.

Love, Maud
