Woman resting on a tiger head on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with a bob haircut rests her crossed arms on top of a snarling tiger head with bared fangs and wide eyes. The design uses bold black outlines, solid black fills and stippled shading on the cheeks and the tiger's stripes. The tattoo sits against a plain grey background with a grey t-shirt visible at the edge of the frame.

The band had been tuning for twenty minutes and Maureen had been leaning on the tiger for most of them. It sat on a plinth beside the cloakroom hatch at the Crown Ballroom, a papier-mâché head with glass eyes and a mouth full of fangs, won in a raffle by a manager nobody remembered. Nobody else in Hull would have crossed their arms over that snarl. Maureen did it every Friday and waited for something to happen.

Something usually did, if you waited long enough. Sid from the Corporation buses came in at half eight with his good shoes in a paper bag and asked her again for a dance. She gave him the same answer she always gave, that she was minding coats, and watched him go off with the bag tucked under his arm like a deflated cushion.
Ronnie Shaw, the bandleader, came over at the interval with two bottles of lemonade and the look of a man who had run out of options. The pianist had gone home with a cold. Would she sit in for the last set? She had learned on her aunt's upright and nobody had heard her play in six years. She told him she'd think about it, which was what she told everyone, and then she lifted her arms from the tiger's head and walked to the stage with her shoulders back.
The first chord came out wrong and she didn't stop. By the end of the night the floor had emptied except for two old couples still circling, and the tiger went on staring at the cloakroom with its teeth bared at nothing, which seemed about right to her.
